Vacuum Filter FAQ

How often do I need to change my vacuum filter.

The rule of thumb is that a vacuum filter should be changed or cleaned if possible every 6 months, regardless of the type of vacuum filter. Whether it is a hepa filter or a electrostatic chamber filter it is important that filters are changed regularly because a clogged or compromised filter can have a negative impact on the performance of a vacuum. You should check your vacuum manual for specific recommendations from the manufacturer.

Can I wash my vacuum filter?

Some filters are washable. Most are not. The packaging your filter came in will clearly indicated that if the filter is indeed washable. If you do have a washable filter and chose to wash it the filter needs to be totally dry before it is reinstalled in the vacuum. It is common from consumers who have washable filters to buy a spare so they are never without a filter while one is being washed.

Do bagless vacuum cleaners cost less to maintain then regular vacuums?

Generally, no. Filters need to be replaced in most cases just like a vacuum bag. The price of maintenance over time is comparable from our experience. There are exceptions but they are not the norm.

Are bagged vacuums better than bagless vacuums?

A vacuum is generally not better because it does or does not use a bag. Most of the premium vacuum cleaners that focus on providing superior filtration use a vacuum bag and 1 to 2 filters to create multiple levels of filtration. This is most common in canister vacuums.

Why is my filter black on one side?

Some filters contain charcoal which is used to filter scents during cleaning. Charcoal filters reduce smells that may be emitted during the cleaning process.

Can I use generic filters for my vacuum?

In most cases a generic filter is perfectly fine. If you own a high end vacuum like a Sebo or Miele we would recommend that you stick with the manufacturers filters. For brands like Dirt Devil, Fantom, Eureka or Hoover it probably does not make any difference.

Who makes generic filters.

EnviroCare, DVC - MicroLined, 3M and Honeywell are the most popular after market manufacturers of vacuum filters at the moment. There are others but these 4 brands are very popular.
